Should I Upgrade Vista to Windows 7?

Windows 7 is MUCH faster than Vista, and more reliable.

However, the expected 45-minute upgrade process could take hours if not done correctly. Microsoft and computer manufacturers usually recommend backing up all your data and completely erasing Windows Vista before installing the new version.  We don't think this is always necessary; we would have to talk to you ahead of time to discuss how your computer is operating now, and whether it would be worth it to you.

If we think your computer is an easy candidate for an upgrade, then it would just be the cost of the upgrade software, plus 1 hour.

If you have a lot of irreplacible data to backup first, this process costs the price of the Windows 7 upgrade software ($150 to $300) plus labor, which usually takes 3-4 hours which includes:

Backing up all the information you have ever put onto the computer including files, folders, emails, address books, finances, music, pictures, favorites, and more.  You cannot backup a program.  You need to install it from the original CDs which need to be Windows 7 compatible.  This process could take from 10 minutes to 2 hours.

Restoring everything:

  • Reformat Hard Drive
  • Install Windows 7 Operating System (45 min)
  • Download Install All Drivers from the manufacturer's website (video, modem, sound, networking) (1 hour)
  • Install All Current Microsoft Critical Updates including Service Packs (1-3 hours)
  • Install All Driver Updates from Microsoft (which could prevent future problems)
  • Install Adobe Flashplayer for Internet Explorer
  • Install Firefox
  • Install Adobe Flashplayer for Firefox
  • Removed Unnecessary Icons & Trial Programs
  • Load Adobe Acrobat Reader (to view files which end in .pdf)
  • Load Malwarebytes spyware remover
  • Load & Update an Antivirus & Antispyware Program
  • Load Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack (to read 2007 files if you don’t have 2007)
  • Then, load all YOUR programs
  • Transfer all your data back to where it belongs.

The best thing is for us to do is to talk to you over the phone to decide what is best.
