Weekend Techie Now 2008 Business of the Year

“The secret to loving your job is to do something you would do for free.”  That’s how a local computer enthusiast turned a lifetime hobby into the 2008 Business of the Year.

Scott Henke started with computers in 1975; he was nine.  He started getting paid for his work in 1982.  Scott saw the invention of the dial up modem, a monitor, the mouse, floppies, hard drives, up to the computers we have grown to frustrate us today.

Scott has a heritage of entrepreurship.  His Great-Great Grandfather was Chin Lin Sou, a pioneer in Colorado history who was the foreman on the Transcontinental Railroad.  Chin is featured on the Colorado Convention Center's Historic Wall as well as a stained glass window in the Colorado State Capitol.  Scott's family also owned and operated the famous Lotus Room restaurant for 35 years at 9th and Speer.

Now, Onsite Consulting, Inc. has over 3500 clients in Denver and around the country.  This company serves clients with everything from tutoring to networking and small business servers.  Primarily, Onsite provides troubleshooting, to help families and small businesses owners with our constant nemesis -- the computer.

This Spring, Onsite was recognized by the Cherry Creek Chamber of Commerce (www.cherrycreekchamber.org) as 2008 Business of the year because of their commitment to the community.  Last year, they gave over $4000 to needy individuals in services and equipment.  They often refurbish used computers with new hard drives, and provide them to homes and businesses at cost.

They provide equipment to Lifebyte (www.lifebyte.org), an organization through Colorado Community Church which helps groups such as Hurricane Katrina victims.  In addition, Onsite trains the IT Missionaries for nine African countries through the Nazarene Church International at no charge.

Onsite also offers free and low-cost classes through senior centers such as Heather Gardens Retirement Community, DenverCommunitySchools, Optimists Clubs, and through the Osher Life-Long Learners Institute (OLLI) at the University of Denver (www.universitycollege.du.edu/learning).   Give Scott a microphone, laptop and projector, and he will instantly draw a crowd.

Scott has also received grants from the Denver Minority Opportunity Fund in appreciation of Onsite's efforts towards helping underprivileged Denver residents.

Three of the staff members have Colorado teacher certifications.  Three are Microsoft Certified.  Two are females.  All were hired on their abilities to communicate with the customer.

Onsite grows "By Referral Only" and does not list itself in any phone book or online listing service.

In addition to many free methods to keep customers' computers spyware and virus free, his website (www.onsitehero.com) has testimonials from dozens and dozens of faithful customers who have benefited from his company’s greatest assets, his employees -- “Non-Geeky Guys Who Can Communicate”.
